Plano-convex lenses are ideal for focusing parallel rays to one point, and can be used in a variety of applications. They have a positive focal length, and they have a near-optimal appearance for infinite and finite conjugate applications. Plano-convex lenses can converge the collimated beam on the back focus, and can also turn a point light source into a collimated beam. Plano-convex lenses are usually used to focus parallel light. The front and rear surfaces of the plano-convex lens are asymmetric, so it can effectively reduce spherical aberration, especially in applications where the object image distance is not equal. The best application is to place an object at infinity (that is, as parallel light incident) and image in the focal plane. At this time, the object-image conjugate ratio (ie, object distance/image distance) is infinite. The convex surface of the lens should be placed facing the object direction.

Example with BK7 material:These N-BK7 Plano-Convex lenses are available uncoated or with one of five antireflection coatings (-A, -AB, -B, -C, or -D), which reduces the amount of light reflected from each surface of the lens (see the Selection Guide table below for coating option). Since approximately 4% of the incident light is reflected at each surface of an uncoated substrate, the application of an AR coating improves transmission, which is important in low-light applications, and prevents the undesirable effects (e.g., ghost images) associated with multiple reflections. Having optics that are AR coated on both surfaces is particularly desirable for applications utilizing multiple optical elements. Please see the Graphs tab for additional coating information.
